Dubrovnik is a city situated on the southern Croatian coast dating from the 7th century. Numerous stories and theories are connected with its foundation. It was a centre of the development of Croatian language and literature, the home to many Croatian artists and prominent people, powerful naval force and rival of the Venetian Republic, as well as the capital of the Republic of Dubrovnik. Today, Dubrovnik is considered one of the most beautiful Croatian cities. In 1979 the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
